The Ultimate Guide to Cosmetic Injectables
February 24, 2023
Having been a cosmetic nurse injector for the past 22 years, cosmetic injectables are my passion and I am so glad to be able to share my passion with you. The cosmetic injectable market has grown hugely in the last 20 years, and I have seen it go from something I was scared to talk about at a party due to peoples sceptical thinking of it too now having to take a pocket full of business cards as everyone wants to know more and wants to start doing it. Techniques understanding of the aging face and structure as well as the range of products have improved leading to much more natural results. Below is a summary of cosmetic injectables.
Cosmetic injectables what are they?
Cosmetic injectables are basically pharmaceutical made compounds that are injected into the face to change the appearance.
The most common ones people know of are Botox ( botulinum toxin type A) and dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm, but there are other types of injectable treatments such as collagen stimulators available as well.
Are cosmetic injectables safe for our skin?
Like any treatment cosmetic injectables can also have their risks but these are very low and overall very safe treatments. They make the skin look “”better”” but are not only designed for the skin. However they are also designed to replace fat and volume, give elasticity and structure back to the face to help contour and balance the face.
What are the differences between anti wrinkle injections and cosmetic injections?
In Australia we cannot use the words Botox, Dysport, Xenomin, Restylane, Juvederm, etc as these are what we class as S4 pharmaceuticals and we are unable to advertise brands within Australia. To be able to advertise, people have started to advertise any of the botulinum toxins such as Botox as anti wrinkle treatments or anti wrinkle injections. Dermal fillers tend to be referred to as cosmetic injections. Anti wrinkle injections as they are called tend to be muscle relaxants and only work on wrinkles caused by a muscle contraction where is what is referred to as cosmetic injectables tend to be fillers and can be used for anything from making a lip a little bigger to filling in volume loss to sculpting the face.
How long do cosmetic injectables last?
How long the injections last depends on many factors. The first is what sort of treatment was done. Anti wrinkle treatment tends to last between 3 to 4 months as an average but you will always get people where it only last six weeks and other people where it will last 12 months but they tend to be the 10% on either end. With dermal fillers it’s much more complicated. It can depend on the area injected and the Depth that you’re going, whether it be into the skin, the dermis, the fat layer or down on bone. The thickness of the product that you were using and how difficult it is for the body to break down. It can also depend on people‘s metabolic rates and how quickly they break down the substances. Generally fillers last anywhere from three months to 10 years and there has been evidence on ultrasound of filler being in the tissue even longer than this.
Do cosmetic injectables cause disease?
Cosmetic injectables have now been around for over 30 years and in this time we have seen no evidence that these products cause any long lasting detrimental effects or disease.
Do cosmetic injectables cause lupus?
Again as above it has been around for over 30 years and there is no evidence that they cause Lucas or other problems. As the products such as fillers are made out of substances that are found naturally in our bodies this is the reason we break them down our bodies don’t tend to react to them. There are always people who will be more sensitive to products, but allergy is extremely rare and people are more likely to be allergic to the latex in my gloves in the filler I’m injecting into them.
Like anything however the more experienced the injector the less likely there is to be an issue. With any complication knowledge of the treatment professional on how to treat these complications is important as most complications if detected and treated early cause no problems.
