Answers to your questions about Pigmented Skin
Pigmentation’s three main causes are hormones and sun damage and PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). There are also pigmented lesions that we can be born with or are genetic eg birth mark Regardless of the origin of your pigmentation sun exposure will make it worse. Regardless of the treatment path you choose it is often a slow process removing pigmentation and long-term sun smarts and maintenance skincare is required to prevent it returning.
The treatments we recommend are:
IPL Photo rejuvenation – this can be done of many skins but the more olive/ brown your skin is the higher the risk of making the pigment worse
Fractionated LaserTtherapy – This treatment can assist with deeper pigment such as birthmarks and melasma
Facial treatments – with lightening agents in them such as skin needling, microdermabrasion and specific peels for pigment removal
Hormonal Pigmentation
Hormonal pigmentation is often caused by pregnancy’s hormones’ or the contraceptives’ pill. Sometimes when we remove the cause of the pigment the issue will go away but sometimes it remains. Laser or IPL can be beneficial for this sort of pigment as can medium depth peels but if you have Asian or darker skins it can potentially make it worse. Lightening skincare is important to use even when having laser treatments
Sun Damage
Sun damage pigment often responds extremely well to IPL treatment. The whole skin area can be treated or just individual spots. We can treat anywhere on the body. IPL is however limited to treating sun spots that aren’t raised. For raised or scaly sun spots a trip to the dermatologist is recommended. With treating any sun damage it is important to get all spots checked before we remove them
PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation)
This condition is common in people with more olive or darker skins. Because their skin produces pigment so easily something as simple as a lip wax or rubbing your eyes is enough to stimulate the pigment cells into action leaving a dark shadowing on the skin. This is difficult to treat as any stimulation from lasers peels etc can make the condition worse and stimulate more pigment . The best way to treat is with pigment inhibitor skincare
